with Dr. Emily Horowitz, author of Protecting Our Kids? How Sex Offender Laws are Failing Us
Thursday, October 25 @ 7pm
Cambridge Friends Center, 5 Longfellow Park (off Brattle Street coming out of Harvard Square, Cambridge)
Emily Horowitz, Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at St. Francis College (Brooklyn, NY), will review some of the research and evidence about sex offense registries and the harm they cause. She will discuss recent efforts to challenge these popular but ineffective and damaging policies.
“The sex offense registry is essentially a naming and shaming scheme that doesn’t protect anyone. Over 20 years of studies and research show our sex offense legal regime doesn’t make us safer or protect anyone, as it costs millions and destroys lives. There are nearly 1 million people on sex offense registries in the United States, and the number increases each year. Those interested in criminal justice reform must consider the draconian sex offense legal regime in advocacy efforts, though it is an issue that is often orphaned in bipartisan efforts to reduce mass incarceration.” Emily Horowitz
Following Dr. Horowitz will be a panel discussion with those impacted by the registry including:
Nancy DiZio, treatment provider, New England Forensic Associates
Tim Anderson, resident at the Southampton street shelter
Bill Canavan, director, Boston Release Network
Sponsored by the: Sex Offender Policy Reform Initiative (SOPRI) of the Criminal Justice Policy Coalition, ACLU of Massachusetts, National Center for Reason and Justice, and Boston Release Network.

When I saw “New England Forensic Associates,” it immediately threw red flags in my mind — as its name is eerily similar to Pacific Forensic Psychology Associates (aka the shady umbrella company to Sharper Future). Indeed, a Google search indicates that New England Forensic Associates is engaged in the same pseudoscience commonly used by “forensic psychologists” as part of the sex offender / prison industrial system. New England Forensic Associates uses junk “science” such as the ABEL and Static-99R. New England Forensic Associates also uses the highly intrusive Penile Plethysmograph. Too bad that the ACLU of Massachusetts is not quick to recognize that it’s invited a prison industrial system profiteer to its event.

Of course, personally, like most of you (presumably), I’m pretty numb to all the corruption at this point. But it should be troubling that these corrupt profiteers have infected and assimilated themselves with the normally “good” organizations.
Respect, praise, and blessings to all these people for bringing this to light and going against the mass hysteria. Thank you. The wave is growing.
I read her book. She does great work and is very knowledgeable about our situation and how unconstitutional and counter productive it all is.
Yep, as AJ has stated, “how can a law that was based on known falsehoods be considered rational?” I think that was pretty close to what he stated that is in my complaint. The fact of the matter is, any laws that have been unconstitutional when enacted get struck down eventually. Just a matter of time and a matter of how many people get involved.
Emily Horowitz is awesome. Enough said.
You know who lives in Massachusetts but wasn’t invited? Wendy “I never met a false rape claim” Murphy.
